What's New in the Library's eBook Service This Month?

What's New in the Library's eBook service this month?

Featured Author: Gina Frangello

Gina Frangello has edited the award-winning fiction magazine Other Voices for over a decade. She is also the Sunday editor of The Rumpus and the fiction editor of The Nervous Breakdown. What happens when a long-time editor starts writing novels? Sensational stories that you can’t put down.

The latest novel from this author is
A Life In Men. It is the soul-searching story of a life-long friendship between two women that ends unexpectedly. Before the reasons for the abrupt departure can be explored, one of them dies of cancer. The sudden passing leaves the remaining friend full of questions, sadness, and a personal search for meaning.

“A stunning novel--Frangello’s broken characters live in a world of terror and redemption, of magnificent sadness and beauty.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“In this bravura performance, a quantum creative leap . . . Frangello astutely dissects the quandaries of female sexuality, adoption, terminal illness, and compound heartbreak in a torrent of tough-minded observations, audacious candor, and storytelling moxie.”
—Booklist

Without Genealogy, Life Would Be Boring

The Faye McMinn Genealogical Research Center of the Pittsburg Camp County Public Library received the following request:
"I am hoping you can direct me in the right direction to find a final piece of documentation that will permit me to submit an application to DAR."

Our AWESOME VOLUNTEER responded with the information the lady requested, finding it in the newly archived copies of the Pittsburg Gazette Digitization Project. This digitization project continues to benefit researchers daily!

Here is the message she received back:
"I think the obituary you have provided will be exactly what I need!  I cannot thank you enough!
You are a rock star!  I'm so impressed!  You are amazing!  Thank you so much!"

We think she was happy!

The Takeaway:
#1 - We have some awesome genealogy volunteers!
#2 - The digitization project was and is successful. If you've not visited them yet, here is how you get there:

Thankful for Autumn Colors / Agradecido por colores del otoño

Thankful for Autumn Colors
(Desplácese hacia abajo para el español)

The website http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/fallcolr/fallcolr.html states: “Every autumn across the Northern Hemisphere, diminishing daylight hours and falling temperatures induce trees to prepare for winter. In these preparations, they shed billions of tons of leaves. In certain regions, such as our own, the shedding of leaves is preceded by a spectacular color show.” Check out their great website for LOTS of information.

I don’t know about you, but I love autumn.  I am blessed every morning as I drive by the Primary School campus on Broach Street. The trees are a beautiful canvas of gold and reds. I love the reds most, just partial I guess. My grandmother Alice Bynum loved bright colors. She was special to me and she loved me ‘just as I am’. Everybody needs somebody like that. Some people do not know how to be happy and thankful. Maybe they never had someone like her in their life. I wish they had because there is no other feeling like it. There is always wonder and beauty to behold. All you have to do is look… and be thankful.

New Books: “Protector” by Diana Palmer; “The Quest” by Nelson DeMille; “Never Go Back” by Lee Child; “Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life And Legacy As The Duck Commander” by Phil Robertson; “Bleeding Edge” by Thomas Pynchon; “Eat Healthy, Feel Great” by William                 Sears; “Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy” by E. Colores de otoño

Census Info NOT to be filled out on web

April 1st is April Fool’s Day, but this message is NOT a joke. Do not get taken during this time of 2010 Census information collection. The Census Bureau will not be the only ones trying to get our attention and encouraging us to help them collect data. Cybercriminals will be doing the same thing, but they will be trying to fool us into thinking they are the Census Bureau. And the data they will be collecting will be a little different. It will be personal information they can use to rip us off. There are a couple of key words to point out: “mail” and “at-home visit.” The census will primarily be a paper and pencil process, with, according this Census webpage: http://2010.census.gov/2010census/how/interactive-form.php, there is no part of the census form available to be filled out online. So, we encourage computer users to be very wary of any online communications—including emails and social networking messages—that you receive regarding the census, particularly any that ask you to click on a link or URL, open an attachment or respond with personal information, because these could very likely be scams. Even clicking on a link simply to see if it takes them to a legitimate site can be very hazardous, since many of today’s malware infections occur via drive-by download attacks, in which all a user does is simply visit a malicious or compromised website. If you receive any online communication regarding the census, the best thing to do is simply give the U.S. Census Bureau a call and ask them to confirm that they sent you a message, or ask them to simply take care of the matter over the phone if possible.

New Fiction includes: “Chaosbound” by David Farland; “The Accidental Werewolf” by Dakota Cassidy; “Strange Candy” by Laurell K. Hamilton; “The Wedding Machine” by Beth Webb Hart; “Between Sundays” by Karen Kingsbury; “The Swan Thieves” by Elizabeth Kostova; “Cowgirl At Heart” by Christine Lynxwiler; “My Son, John” by Kathi Macias; “Vanishing Act” by Fern Michaels.

It is hard to believe, but if you call the library and ask if a specific library patron is there, we do not give out that information. Please understand that we have patrons that have or have had restraining orders or protective orders for/against them or someone else. Someone will call and want to know if a particular person is in the library so they will know if they can or cannot be there at the same place as or within xx number of feet of that person. It is also hard to believe, but we deal with this much more often than you realize and we do not hesitate to call the police department if necessary. Whether you are asking for someone as a parent and child, other family member, or friend, it is not in the library’s best interest or yours for us to give out this information. We will take a message and attempt to deliver it for you. If you are in the library and need to call someone to pick you up, we will accommodate that need.

Loosening the reins...

It is difficult when you begin a blog to know just how many hoops to make people jump through when leaving comments. While we don't want spam comments, it should be easier! So we have loosened up the reins and you may now leave comments easily. All comments you leave will still be moderated, but at least now you don't have to have a Google account or LiveID to be able to do so.
