Book Review: Stitches by Anne Lamott

Stitches: A Handbook on Meaning, Hope and Repair
By Lamott, Anne
2013-10 - Hardcover, Riverhead Books, ISBN: 9781594632587
Reviewed by: Nancy Murillo, Library Director

A wise and compassionate exploration of how we can make sense of life's chaos. What do we do when life lurches out of balance? How can we reconnect to one other and to what's sustaining, when evil and catastrophe seem inescapable? These questions lie at the heart of Stitches.

Publisher Comments:
In this book, Lamott explores how we find meaning and peace in these loud and frantic times; where we start again after personal and public devastation; how we recapture wholeness after loss; and how we locate our true identities in this frazzled age. We begin, Lamott says, by collecting the ripped shreds of our emotional and spiritual fabric and sewing them back together, one stitch at a time.
It's in these stitches that the quilt of life begins, and embedded in them are strength, warmth, humor, and humanity.

Nancy’s review:
This book appealed to me for several reasons. First, it was about faith. Second, it had a title and cover that related to quilting, which holds many positive memories for me. Last, it was only 112 pages, as I was spread thin on several projects and needed some short quiet moments. Even at 112 pages, it took me a week because I wanted to soak it all in, read, then reread, then tag it with a sticky note for later. By the time I finished, I had nearly as many sticky notes as there were pages.
Ms. Lamott pulls you in with everyday things, life, the killings at Newtown, illness, divorce, Sunday School. I laughed, I cried, and at times stared at the page wide-eyed because of her irreverence. It was wonderful. Hope, faith, grace, and spirituality are needed as you stitch your life back together after tragedy, divorce, death, loss, addiction, illness, aging, etc. Life is messy and we live stitch by stitch.
You start where you can, where you are. Ms. Lamott helps soothe the sore places in your heart and soul, so you can take the next stitch, and then the next, repairing what have become ‘the rags of your life'. We all struggle to keep the fabric of our lives together. If you have ever had to piece your life back together and just keep going, you will relate. As you already know, ‘the rags of life’ can be stitched into a beautiful new quilt.

Thankful for Autumn Colors / Agradecido por colores del otoño

Thankful for Autumn Colors
(Desplácese hacia abajo para el español)

The website http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/fallcolr/fallcolr.html states: “Every autumn across the Northern Hemisphere, diminishing daylight hours and falling temperatures induce trees to prepare for winter. In these preparations, they shed billions of tons of leaves. In certain regions, such as our own, the shedding of leaves is preceded by a spectacular color show.” Check out their great website for LOTS of information.

I don’t know about you, but I love autumn.  I am blessed every morning as I drive by the Primary School campus on Broach Street. The trees are a beautiful canvas of gold and reds. I love the reds most, just partial I guess. My grandmother Alice Bynum loved bright colors. She was special to me and she loved me ‘just as I am’. Everybody needs somebody like that. Some people do not know how to be happy and thankful. Maybe they never had someone like her in their life. I wish they had because there is no other feeling like it. There is always wonder and beauty to behold. All you have to do is look… and be thankful.

New Books: “Protector” by Diana Palmer; “The Quest” by Nelson DeMille; “Never Go Back” by Lee Child; “Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life And Legacy As The Duck Commander” by Phil Robertson; “Bleeding Edge” by Thomas Pynchon; “Eat Healthy, Feel Great” by William                 Sears; “Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy” by E. L. James; “A Hidden Enemy” by Erin Hunter; “The Throne Of Fire” by Rick Riordan; “Starry Night: A Christmas Novel” by Debbie Macomber; “Butterfly Gardening For Texas” by Geyata Ajilvsgi; “The Tehran Initiative” by Joel C. Rosenberg; “Unbreakable: My Story, My Way” by Jenni Rivera; “Damascus Count Down” by Joel C. Colores de otoño

Spring: A time of Growth, New Life, and Renewal / Primavera: Un tiempo de crecimiento, Vida nueva, y Renovación

Spring begins with the vernal equinox at 7:02 A.M. (EDT) on March 20, 2013 in the Northern Hemisphere. Spring is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life (both plant and animal) being born and is also used more generally as a metaphor for the start of better times. It is also an unstable time of weather as seasons change.
According to Wikipedia.org, the axis of the Earth is increasing its tilt toward the Sun and the length of daylight rapidly increases for the relevant hemisphere. The hemisphere begins to warm significantly causing new plant growth to "spring forth," giving the season its name.
Unstable weather may more often occur during spring. In the United States, Tornado Alley is most active this time of year, especially since the Rocky Mountains prevent the surging hot and cold air masses from spreading eastward and instead force them into direct conflict. Besides tornadoes, supercell thunderstorms can also produce dangerously large hail and very high winds, for which a severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning is usually issued.

New books include: “Texting Manual 4Every1: A Compilation Of Over 5000 Texting Symbols” by Alexis McGeachy; “Life Code: The New Rules For Winning In The Real World” by Philip McGraw; “Heavenly Company: Entertaining Angels Unaware” by Cecil Murphey; “Help, Thanks, Wow: Three Essential Prayers” by Anne Lamott; “The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn From Traditional Societies?” by Jared Diamond; “The Secret Of Shelter Island: Money And What Matters” by Alexander Green; “The Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey; “The Generals” by Thomas E. Ricks; “A Gift Of Hope” by Danielle Steel; “The Last Lion, Winston Spencer Churchill” by William Manchester; “Thomas Jefferson: The Art Of Power” by Jon Meacham; “The Patriarch: The Remarkable Life And Turbulent Times Of Joseph P. Kennedy” by David Nasaw; “Hitmaker: The Man And His Music” by Tommy Mottola; “My Beloved World” by Sonia Sotomayor; “Waging Heavy Peace: A Hippie Dream” by Neil Young.
